Are you our next collective good partner?

Are you our next collective good partner?

First, we want to thank our (m)otherboard members for their contributions to our emerging work on AI governance principles. It’s honestly exhilarating to see collaborative governance at work and to get a window into the collective insight and brilliance alive in this group. We've distilled a few guiding questions and principles that are open for comment until March 23.

“MODEST” (not so modest) PROPOSAL FOR COLLECTIVE AI STEWARDSHIP

As we synthesized what we wrote together over the past few weeks, something else happened. We saw an opportunity to offer an alternative idea of what’s possible to Humanity AI, who was looking for an executive director to steward their $500M fund. We threw our hat in the ring publicly—and earnestly!—as both an offer and a provocation called Collective Intelligence Ahoy! Imagine a future where collective genius stewards outsized opportunity!

What happened next was really exciting. Leaders from organizations across tech justice reached out and said: we LOVE this idea of collective governance, how can we help? And that only put wind in our sails (to continue the pirate ship metaphor of our letter) that we might become a collective of not just individuals but also organizations, and that kind of collective could make our pitch to some of these big money orgs even stronger.

In fact, it felt like the moment we’ve been preparing for, building the social practices to bend the arc of technology towards collective good.

And we realized: the (m)otherboard governance structure doesn’t have a role for what we call “collective good partners” (CGPs)—parallel or complementary organizations working towards similar goals.

So while we were synthesizing the incredible outcomes of our first AI policy town hall, we realized we need a second town hall to invite our current members and prospective CGPs to co-design what that CPG governance role looks like.

Our north star is to imagine that an organization like Humanity AI could actually hand our collective or individuals and organizations an “executive director role” in the future, and we would have the governance structure in place to meet that moment.

So as you review the synthesis and provocations attached for feedback, we’d love for you to start thinking of how we might expand the process that produced this collective work to collective good partners—not just individuals, but real coalition building.

NEXT: FILM! POETRY! BOOK CLUB! CO-CREATION!

We invite you to join us for a series of upcoming events that demonstrate our commitment to shared governance and to building a new canon—to keep us thinking, talking, and designing together. And getting to know each other! And we’re opening to more formats beyond books, with two exclusive film screenings for our members that are not yet available for wide distribution.

Mr Jesus is a comedy pilot about a down on his luck actor who wakes up one morning to discover his image has been stolen to make a GenAI Jesus, and now everyone thinks he's really the Second Coming. One of (m)otherboard’s central projects is this co-production with god(m)other Emily Best's company Good&Yum. We're touring around the country with this film to faith communities and to engage them in conversations about AI stewardship. Our effort to build a new canon is not limited to the books we view as central to shaping our future but also the modalities. Become a member for the RSVP link.
