Help us raise $28,440.93 to support tech justice leaders in 2026

Dear friend of (m)otherboard,

We’ve raised $5,799.07 toward our goal of $34,240, with just 2 days left!

(m)otherboard Guaranteed Basic Income (GBI) Program supports tech justice leaders at critical junctures, ensuring they can safely continue their work. By providing no-strings-attached financial support to changemakers GBI demonstrates the power of resourcing rest, care, and possibility in strengthening the tech justice movement.

Contributions from our membership has already helped us distribute $40,000 in GBI over the past year.

Here's what happened:

  • A prominent tech whistleblower was facing retaliation and struggling to find a job that aligned with her ethics to support herself and her new baby. We stepped in with GBI to give her the extra time she needed to find values-aligned work: "I really cannot overstate how much help this GBI experiment has been for me and my family. We live in capitalist hell and at the end of the day, money is what helps us keep going by ensuring needs like housing, health insurance, and food aren't out of reach. There is no amount of verbal support that can fill the gap the way these types of payments do."
  • A researcher escaped unethical work while keeping healthcare: "The best way I could describe the GBI was really, a sense of safety that gave me more spaciousness to think and reflect, and most of all, tend to my body."
  • An independent journalist grew their Substack from 2k to 7k followers and published in WSJ, NYT, PBS, and Bloomberg: "Without this grant, I would've had to dig into savings to meet basic needs. This allowed me to prioritize authenticity and quality."
  • A movement builder completed their book, which we will feature in our next book club.

This giving season we have a goal of raising $34,240 by December 31 to support 2 more leaders for 9 months.

The gap to reach our goal: $28,440.93

Here's how you can help:

In solidarity and urgency,
