Book Club this Wednesday: American Indigenous Democracy
Dear friends,
This Wednesday, we’ll gather for our first of two conversations on American Indigenous Democracy: A Call for Interdependence, our summer book club selection. As we reflect on this month that celebrates and contends with America at 250, we couldn’t imagine a more perfect book to read and discuss together.

For the past three months, god(m)others Mara and Sara, and member MCK have been leading a facilitated reading and conversion with about 60 early readers of the book, in dialogue with many of the book’s authors and contributors. What’s resulted from these conversations has been extraordinary: memes, zines, condolences and thanksgivings in our own words, and a deep hunger and curiosity for this wisdom as we imagine a more interdependent future.
READ: We’ve found this volume of essays can be savored in any order. So we invite you to skim the table of contents, read the chapter titles, and explore what calls to your heart.
OUT LOUD: If you have time between now and Wednesday, we ask you to read one of the chapters aloud. You can read it out to yourself, at the dinner table, to a friend, or send it as a voice memo to someone you think would appreciate hearing from you. As you’ll come to learn and may appreciate already, the oral tradition connects us to our heart in a different way and, like poetry, we’ve experienced that these words spoken land powerfully.

Session 1: Wednesday July 29 7–9 PM ET

- Peace as the people's preferred way of life and the highest calling of government.
- Law rooted in appreciation for all life — from people to Mother Earth to the cosmos.
Session 2: Wednesday August 12 7–9 PM ET
- Humans living in reciprocity with the natural world.
- Long-term thinking: every decision considered seven generations ahead.
